P1LB How Penguins Keep Warm 🐧

1st Feb 2024

This term we have been learning about how polar animals stay warm in cold climates.

We know that a penguin chick has down feathers to keep warm and adults cover their feathers in a natural oil to ensure they are waterproof so that they can survive the cold weather conditions of the Antarctic.

Today we experimented using different colouring materials such as crayons, felt tips and colouring pencils to see which was the most waterproof and which was the most absorbant.

We loved using pipettes to drop water on to each of our penguins. We found that the penguins coloured with wax crayons didn't absorb water into the paper. The crayon acted similar to the oil on a penguin’s feathers.
